MORNING DRIFTS / California
There is definitely magic in California, because this is where this picture was taken. It might seem as if the sky were replaced and that the colors are from a different planet, but everything in this scene is authentic.
If you ever visited in the Imperial Dunes you know that what you see here is a mere fraction of the 40 mile long stretch of dunes in the south central of California.
On a very early morning, after waking up in our little white 2005 Nissan, at a “camp ground” at 5:30 in the morning, my wife and I drove about 10 minutes to a near by location with a view that revealed a lot of the 40 mile long dune park.
We got there and parked, and I immediately took my camera to capture the sun while rising fast, changing the colors like it was moving the hue and saturation sliders in Photoshop. It was fast! It was different! I felt as if I was traveling between worlds every few seconds. A very surreal experience.
When we got there, another couple – a photographer and his girl – arrived there as well. We both started shooting from a very similar location until I crossed a certain rope. Once I crossed, he felt confident to do so as well. The difference between us was that I went all in. I was chasing the sunrise colors like the Spanish running away at the Running of the Bulls once a year. It was madness! I saw him shooting from afar, from the same spot, while I was going up and down the dunes. Big or small, it didn’t matter.
I remember thinking to myself, “what the hell is he thinking? There is so much to capture”.
At around 7 am I was already tired, as if I spent 5 intensive hours at the gym.
But, guess what? I captured that image. And many more!
