The most bison I’ve ever seen were in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. We (my wife and I) had at least four encounters with bison that were just walking calmly on the road, causing mini traffic jams.

After arriving in Yellowstone, at around noon on May 5th, and spending the rest of the day exploring, we left the park to stay at a near by campground, sleeping in the car as usual.

The next morning I decided we needed to head back to the park before the sunrise, which meant waking up and getting ready to leave before 5:00 am.

While the sunlight slowly chased the night away, I was rushing up the road (at the permitted speed) looking for the best location for breathtaking sunrise photos.

As the skies began the color shifting from dark blues to fire yellows, I felt as if I was about to lose my “Sunrise at Yellowstone” shot. More so, up ahead, right after a small hill, a few bison were taking their morning stroll on the pavement, blocking my way towards the waking sun.

At first, there was a slight frustration at the back of my mind, but after taking in the amazing scene in front of us, very quickly that frustration turned into inspiration.

There were a few cars behind me and I noticed some of them were taking snapshots with their phones. In that moment, I must admit, I was a bit of an a**hole. I parked across the two lanes in so that the bison were right in front of me where I could capture the moment in the best light and composition.

So yeah, I kind of blocked everyone’s view. (Sorry?!).

We did get to a location where I got out of the car and shot the sunrise I wanted all along, but looking back, I believe the bison were my true “Sunrise at Yellowstone”.
